Sleep Tight Review: An Absolute Blast
Remember hearing as a child “Sleep Tight?” Well imagine not being able to get any rest; and instead needing to protect yourself at all cost. It’s a nightmare that requires timing, skills and protection. We Are Fuzzy has managed to take a small concept and present to Nintendo Switch and PC players an exciting survival adventure, Sleep Tight.
Sleep Tight is an top-down arcade style survival that plants you in the middle of your bedroom looking to make it through infinite waves of monsters. Believe me, each night there are plenty of creatures itching to prey on you. Do you think you can make through the night?
Every night you must do everything you can to blast those creepy crawlers back to which they came. It’s not just about blowing them all away however, it requires a bit of strategy, especially as the difficulty increases, throwing an intense challenge your way.
After completing each night your character is able to spend the suns and stars collected, earned or saved between levels. Your bed is where you can replenish health and purchase power ups such as extra shields, speed boost or extra damage. Then there’s a toy box where you can purchase the weapons of your choosing: shotgun, rocket launcher, gatling gun and much more. However unlocking them requires a bit of work at the research station as well as sacrifice.
Players can protect themselves by also building turrets and defense walls. Luckily after the initial purchase it’s cheaper to repair than rebuild your defense mechanisms. Just be sure to choose wisely however as you’re only rewarded with so many stars after each night.
The research station will become your best if you save enough of your resources. Players can create stars with suns and vice versa which comes in handy when adjusting your setup and restocking before nightfall. In addition, you can purchase unique perks for a greater advantage, for example collecting stars by creating magnets or even booby trap your walls and turrets to explode once destroyed.
After a few sessions, I began to learn it’s best to tap the trigger rather than treat every weapon as a machine gun, carelessly spraying through your ammo supply. Most monsters only take around 2-3 shots to kill. The bigger they are the easier they fall! Don’t fall for the oversized gremlins, you can take them.
The Blood Moon levels are the most intense runs you will experience in Sleep Tight. We found ourselves clinching our controller.
On Steam Sleep Tight looks beautiful. Keep in mind this is an animated game that’s all about surviving as many nights as possible. But visually it resembles a high quality Disney Pixar film with Toy Story immediately coming to mind.
There are up to 12 characters you can unlock, each becoming available by completing was feels like nearly impossible challenges. They can be done, but it will take some grinding to earn them. For a game that’s without a doubt a ton of fun, the stretch goals for some of them (level 300 to unlock) feels unreachable.
Out of curiosity, where are these kids parents? They never take restroom breaks, grab a bite to eat or even leave the room. There’s a door but unfortunately no way out. As a child my imagination alone could get me in trouble. These children are our only hope in defending us against the monsters that mean us harm. And one pellet at a time the bedroom-iverse fate is in their hands.
