Best Video Games of 2019
Here at IRB Gamer, we are excited to announce what games delivered everything the fans wanted and more. Yes, there are many more than what we’ll reveal that are well deserving of earning the title Best of, and 2019 Game of the Year. But for each website, there was only one that achieved in various categories. For IRB Gamer, we focused on five categories this year: Action, Sports, RPG, Adventure and the Overall 2019 Game of the Year.
Deciding what development teams earned the “Best of 2019” wasn’t an easy task, coming together and carefully determining with our current and previous staff from IRB. That said, we are extremely enthused to share our picks for The Best Video Games of 2019.
Best Action Game of 2019
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Developer: Infinity Ward
Hands down Call of Duty was both the biggest and most anticipated action game released this year. For many fans that haven’t played Call of Duty in quite some time, this was the wake up call. Gamers looking for boots on ground while channeling a deep story with gut-wrenching moment, Infinity truly delivered the most realistic experience to date. Multiplayer proved the same, giving every type of Call of Duty player exactly what they love about the franchise. And no, not the camping, as someone thinks this somewhere sarcastically.
” Call of Duty Modern Warfare did an outstanding job reintroducing the franchise rather than making minor tweaks and rehashing MW from 2007. I’m excited to see what’s next from Infinity Ward as they just helped revive the series from ground zero. “
Best Sports Game of 2019
MLB 19: The Show
Developer: Sony Interactive Entertainment San Diego
Peanuts and Cracker Jacks are required for is one of the best sports game to date. Not in the press as often as NBA 2K or Madden, however MLB The Show 19 does one thing that triumphs the competition, Road to the Show. The biggest feature that allows you to take advantage of your player when it matters, also while letting you rollover your season to the next version of MLB The Show, something we could only hope for from other games.
Trust us when we say even if you’re not a fan of baseball, this game will make you change your mind and draw you in for hours at a time. Years in the making, but SIE San Diego Studio has perfected over time.
Best Role-Playing Game of 2019
Kingdom Hearts III
Developer: Square Enix
13 long years, an eternity and a half in video game fandom, have long time fans been waiting for the resolution to this epic. Square Enix, the minds behind RPG greats such as Final Fantasy, The Chrono Series and The World Ends with You, amongst plenty of other titles have finally graced us with the arrival of Kingdom Hearts III. The beloved franchise comes to its conclusion and does it with an absolute bang. From the very beginning, Kingdom Hearts III cannonballs the player into its fantastical world with a wonderful culmination of an emotional prologue, beautiful animations and spectacular visuals, and they absolutely ran with it.
“If you’re a returning Kingdom Hearts fan, it’s needless to say how great these games are, nor do you need to be convinced to go and play this. But I’ll tell you what you wanted to know, the wait was indeed worth it. If you love RPGs, if you love Disney, or simply love video games, this one is worth a try. You might just be sucked into one of the biggest fandoms in video games.”
Best Adventure Game of 2019
Control
Developer: Remedy Entertainment
Deep from the vault of mythology of Remedy’s catalogue enters another stellar entry in the incredibly abstract but enjoyable Control. After a handful of hours spent exploring The Oldest House, I still can’t exactly even begin to understand or describe Control and it’s setting, being something that really must be seen to be believed and to be left bewildered by. It isn’t a Remedy game if there aren’t some paranormal and bizarre occurrences at work, and it isn’t a fair fight if you can’t bring a gun to an interdimensional fight.
Remedy stick to their guns with their creations and Control is no different. Being perhaps their most outlandish entry in their catalogue of cult hits and beloved experiences, Control does everything it should and leaves only understanding to be desired. It’s an incredibly enjoyable journey and I can only applaud for people to experience this one for themselves.
2019 Game of the Year
Now our 2019 Game of the Pick is precious as this is the first year we’ve ever created a plaque to award our Game of the Year pick. Stepping into 2020, we are ecstatic to see what comes our way from content creators, developers and the new consoles slated to release, allowing games like Halo: Infinite, Last of Us 2, Resident Evil 3 and Ghost of Tsushima to truly shine and potentially earn the title Game of the Year. As for this year, IRB Gamer has chosen:
The Outer Worlds – Obsidian Entertainment
The Outer Worlds is the newest RPG to hit the market, instantly becoming a game changer. Take control of you own custom character, build your skills to fit your gameplay whether you want to be all about action, stealth, or a diplomat you can do it. The Outer Worlds constructs an entirely new place like you’ve never seen before and it’s yours to explore.
The Outer Worlds became our saving grace and set a new bar for developers to follow. It offers intense action gameplay, meaningful choices, and amazing dialogue ranging from serious and concerning to lighthearted and comical. Fallout offered us dark humor, Borderlands offered out their slap stick comedy and crazy action, but The Outer Worlds isn’t comparable to either. The Outer World stands above the rest and deserves every line of praise that it has and will receive.
