All you worms fans will be happy to know that Team17 Software Ltd. released its newest Worms title to the series. Titled, Worms Revolution, this game keeps true to what fans know and love about previous games in the series, all while adding new features and awesome 3D-graphics with the classic 2D style turn-based gameplay.
What’s that? You have never played a Worms game EVER? Well, no problem. Team 17 has included a tutorial section in the campaign to ensure you learn both the controls and how to use the varied weapons. This is not your traditional tutorial, you feel like you are completing a regular portion of the game and better yet you will even get achievements.
Once you complete the tutorial you will get to move onto the regular missions which, like previously mentioned, hold true to the classic turn-based gameplay we all enjoyed and loved from the other titles. In Worms Revolution you will be presented with a map, multiple enemies and 4 worms for your use. You and the enemy alternate turns allowing each of you the chance to play one character each. Each of your worms have a certain amount of health – which can be seen above their head – a certain amount of time per move, and the use of one weapon/item. However, this is not to say you get to use up all your time and one weapon. Your move is complete when either your time runs out, or you have completed the use of one item or weapon.
The objective is simple, destroy all enemies before they destroy you.
What about these weapons and items you ask. Well these are very special worms that come equipped with weapons such as shotguns, grenades, bazookas, dynamite, missiles, a bat, exploding sheep, and even your finger! As for the items, you will see things like teleporters and jet packs. These are best used to help you quickly get around the map to hard out of reach places. You will also notice boxes located randomly around the map that you can collect. These crates will have weapons or items that you can use to add to your arsenal and aid in the destruction of your enemies.
This time around you will notice some new worm classes. Worms Revolution comes with 4 different types of worms. Keep in mind though that each class has its advantages and disadvantages, so you will want to experiment to decide which one you like best. The classes are Soldier; who is agile and easy to move, Scout; the MOST agile and can get in excellent positions to attack enemies, Scientist; who gives health to other worms and use turrets, and finally the HEAVY; the slowest but the deadliest because he can deal the most damage. Keep in mind that sometimes despite which is your favourite worm, you may need to use a different one depending on the circumstances in your game. Strategy, my friend, is NEVER a bad thing.
The graphics in Worms Revolution are pretty good, when you compare them to an older title, and are actually good overall when you consider the fact that it is just an arcade title. However, I still felt as if they were not completely polished. They were a little jagged and rough around the edges and even felt a little blurry at times – yes I had my glasses on. Despite these small issues, I was impressed with how good the worms looked and smoothly they moved.
The sound and voice work in Worms Revolution is amazing. It is never irritating or distracting and it actually adds to gameplay. It creates a little back story and commentary that you are sure to laugh your butt off to and sometimes even roll your eyes at its corny jokes. The witty comments made the game even more enjoyable.
If you beat or get sick of the campaign option, Worms Revolution also has a multiplayer option. The multiplayer comes with team deathmatch, forts and classic modes in which you worms fans can battle your friends locally or with up to 4 people online. You can also customize your weapon loadouts and even your worms outfits and voices!
Overall Worms Revolution is a cute, fun, and humorous arcade title that I am sure will impress all you WORMS fans, as well as even entire even some noobs. I did have a couple of issues that directly resulted in the deduction of a few points. First there is the issue with the controls, I really disliked them. Out of every game I have ever played this was by far the hardest to learn and adjust to. Although I eventually did, it took way too long. I also found gameplay very slow. LITERALLY, the worms take forever to move and the load times between switching characters takes way too long. So my suggest for all you impatient people would be to try the DEMO first. If you can handle the waiting, then Worms Revolution will be an excellent addition to your game library.
