On the heels of Doc’s recent article “Even Ubisoft Loves a Little Coco” about Coco being featured in a Ghost Recon video in a, politely put, scantily clad outfit. Although I am not sure putting it politely will get the point across. And now that E3 is over what did we learn? Sure we learned all kinds of great stuff about the games to come from the New Black Ops to the new Assassins Creed videos. But what is really important is the divide that still occurs between the sexes and races of all those involved in gaming.
I am sure many of you are thinking, “are you seriously surprised?” Well honestly I am and I’m not. I’m not surprised because there is a constant presence in our world of sexism and racism every day. Whether it be in the gaming community or not, it is occurring every day in all of our every day lives. All you have to do is hope online for a multiplayer match of your favorite Call of Duty game to understand what I am saying. Why I am surprised, this is E3 for christ sakes. I would think that because we are all so excited and hyped about seeing the latest and newest information, game trailers, and game play footage that we would put our ignorance’s on the side burner for at least a couple days, although I would prefer we do it permanently. Are we not all gamers here? Regardless of sex, race, age, ethnicity, color of skin, etc etc. Why can’t we come together for this one huge common interest?
I decided this afternoon to hit up the live feed of the E3 coverage. I wanted to watch the awesomeness in the gaming world I can expect to see and experience in the next year. These links are all provided through the E3 website at http://www.e3expo.com/ so I figured excellent! What I did not expect was the chat window located on the mid right side of the page. But I guess this should be expected as people are bound to want to chat “live” about what they are watching “live”. What I am unhappy to report is the ignorance that is being posted here. Not ignorance about the games and game footage they are watching but rather of the presenters. And when I say presenters I mostly mean Aisha Tyler but all the women in general.
Yes, yes… She has a name. It is Aisha Tyler. Not that chick! Or what I saw 99% of the time “That black chick.” This just being one of the many things I saw spued about her on the Internet. Not only is she an actor and a Comedian but she also has a degree in Political Science, which means not only is she pretty and funny, but she is also smart. She also lent her voice to Halo: Reach in 2010 as one of the Troopers. Yes that’s right. Bet ya didn’t know that! So for all you “she isn’t a real gamer” commenters do you personally know her in real life? No? Didn’t think so. As Doug Heffernan would say “why don’t you take a little bus ride back to Shutty Town?!”
So what is with all the racial and sexiest comments? Are we not living in 2012? A world where just barely 4 years ago not only did a black man become the first black president but he ran against a woman? A woman who would have been the first female president had she won. So why are so many people acting so ignorant? For attention? Or maybe they just like to hear the sound of their voices? I don’t know. But what I do know is that it is unacceptable. And instead of just being shocked by people’s actions and words we all need to put our foot down. We need to stop turning a bind eye to this behavior.
Everything seems to be tolerated more because it is the “internet”. I always hear oh it is just the Internet they wouldn’t say that to your face. Maybe they are right but what we need to ask ourselves is why is this okay even if it is just the Internet?
What would you do if you heard someone say these things in person?
– Since when did they let blacks in E3?
-I can’t hear her with all those bananas in her mouth.
-lol black lady promoting a game setting where her ancestors were enslaved. Irony.
-I hate *******
-Give her a banana
-She is brown as poop
-A giant black chick!
-I was almost convinced I was seeing an APE
-shoot her in her vag
– <Insert Random Boob and Butt comment>
– <Insert random I’d/Not tap that comment>
Yes! These are DIRECT quotes, with the exception of the 2 “Insert Random” comments, I took from the chat window provided in the page with the live feed that were linked by the official E3 website!!!
I am not sure what the website does or has to monitor these chat windows, if anything at all. I hope they do , and I can only hope that these people, who hopefully only momentarily forgot their manners, got banned and or reported. I know it is only the Internet but seriously sometimes WORDS do hurt!
