SWTOR fans are going to be waiting for more then 8 hours it seems as Bioware has tweeted that the scheduled downtime will be pushed further with no ETA. Originally this was the message given to all players who logged in a little before the game went offline:
Hello everyone, we wanted to let you know that we will be performing scheduled maintenance for eight hours on Tuesday, September 18th, 2012 from 2AM CDT (12AM PDT/3AM EDT/8AM BST/9AM CEST/5PM AEST) until 10AM CDT (8AM PDT/11AM EDT/4PM BST/5PM CEST/1AM AEST). All game servers and SWTOR.com will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than eight hours, but could be extended.
This weekly maintenance is done in order to make general improvements and to check performance of the game so that we can continue to provide a consistent, quality experience. Quite often (but not always) after a maintenance period there will be a patch to download. After the maintenance, please login via the launcher to download the latest patch. If your launcher was open during the maintenance, you must close and reopen it for a fresh login.

Thank you for your patience as we maintain service for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.
A lot of speculation is going through the community (or was before that went down too) that this might be the awaited 1.4 update. Players in the test server have relayed that it does seem a little early for that to be the case. Could this downtime be a small injection of what is to become the Free To Play model? You know they’d have to start doing advanced injections before they throw out the big patch (seems that way with other games/companies anyway).
One thing that WILL be taking place is a wide-scale sever merge. Less populated servers will be merged with higher-populace versions. This idea may seem a little controversial at first with the people who love their little server, but with time we know it is all for the better. With the server merging, player will also be granted 12 characters to a server instead of the initial 8. No characters should be deleted in this merge so you can be sure that all your virtual items and progresses will be safe.
What will you do to wait out the downtime of the servers, Old Republic fans?
