Serious Sam is a well known franchise from consoles past and PC. The appearance of this title on XBLA is sure to make long-time fans of the series rejoice. This 2 dimensional side-scroller transports the player back to the golder age of shooters with tons of gore, crazy dialogue and non-stop action. The basic plot requires our hero, Sam, to shut down a number of portals throughout Egypt. Finely crafted levels hold a slew of secrets and unlockables waiting to be discovered by the meticulous player on their journeys.
A unique feature is the ability to create Weapon-Stacks. Stacking different or multiple version of the same weapon allows multiple weapons to be used simultaneously. This opens up a variety of enemy demolishing fun. Scattered throughout the levels are shops where new weapons, upgrades and the like may be purchased with currency dropped from felled bad guys. Huge bosses, unique enemies and customization options allow for a unique game experience not often seen in a side-scroller. The action is non-stop with bad guys teleporting in out of nowhere, often times in droves.
With simple controls, excellent sound effects and subtle background music, the overall design on the game allows new players to jump in quickly and get to smashing foes, Serious Sam style. 2 player cooperative play, re-playable challenges and even an arena to battle friends round out the title making it an incredibly complete 2D Arcade title. This game is easily a must-have for any Serious Sam fan, and most definitely worth a look for retro gamers and fans of over the top shooting action. An excellent retake on the series for XBLA, this is one game not to overlook.
