RuneScape, a popular free MMO, has announced that it is getting rid of millions of long-term dormant account names for use by other players in game. Since its 2001 debut, 220 million player accounts have been created and about 13 million of them are getting the axe this week.
Sixty-six million character names will be freed up meaning for the first time in over a decade, names with real pizazz such as King_elf can be again nabbed up by new players.
The first batch of character names were made available to the RuneScape community on 5th and 13th August, with such ‘desirable’ titles as Banksy, ElloEllo, and Cakelord up for grabs.
For the first 24 hours after the release of each batch, players who want to change their name will need a minimum total level of 1,000 to do so. This allows those who have invested their time in RuneScape to grab the name they want ahead of newer account holders. After the 24 hours have passed, it’s a race to the top.
