Cold Stream, the third DLC to release for the popular Zombie title Left 4 Dead 2, is a community made and tested campaign that is sure to please. Along with this new campaign gamers will also receive 4 of the classic campaigns from Left 4 Dead. After multiple delays for the Xbox version of the Cold Stream DLC we finally got our hands on it last friday. This highly anticipated release, however, did not come without its fair share of problems.
If it wasn’t bad enough that Xbox owners of Left 4 Dead 2, who thought they would be able to purchase Cold Stream on the same day as PC users, had to wait almost 2 weeks longer to get their DLC, but they were also told it would release on two separate occasions only to have the release date pushed back. Then, when they finally were able to download it, there were server issues making it next to impossible to play the co-op mode.
Now that it is all said and done and we can actually play our DLC ,was the wait worth it? In my opinion it was and here is why.
First of all who doesn’t like killing zombies? Adding another campaign is just what the Left 4 Dead 2 title needed. It brought new life to the game by bringing back old fans and bringing on new fans. The best part of this DLC is it is all fan made. Hopefully what this means is that it will have more of what you like. Now, I don’t think Cold Stream brought anything extra special to the series but it did bring more of the already awesome that Left 4 Dead 2 is known for.
Secondly, the graphics are just as good as the previous campaigns and in my opinion actually better. Not better in the sense that they are more advanced, rather just more visually appealing to me. I really enjoyed the outside environment including the creek, my favorite part being the use of a knocked down tree to cross over a pit like area. The audio was also just as good; they kept all the same sounds that the zombies make as well as the character voices.
A few things I did not like were the lack of achievements for the Xbox 360 version, lack of random spawns for the special infected and the increased difficulty. Maybe it was just me but I felt like this DLC was quite a bit more difficult than the other campaigns. I noticed that the special infected were spawning in the same place every time I played through. In a sense this kind of made up for the difficulty because you could anticipate that dreaded tank, but it definitely took away from the anticipation you feel from really not knowing.
Overall Cold Stream is an awesome addition to Left 4 Dead 2 even though it doesn’t have achievements and the other issues did not take away from the overall experience, nor does it stop you from just wanting to have it. If you are not convinced to buy Cold Stream solely to obtain this whole new campaign, then maybe knowing you can get 4 of the classic campaigns from Left 4 Dead will help sway your decision. For 560 MSP Cold Stream is a must buy.
