Knack was a quirky launch title when it first launched back with the Playstation 4. Its characters and world felt something akin to a Pixar movie, and the game’s antagonist ‘Knack’ helped show of the tech of the PS4 itself. Personally, I enjoyed the first Knack even if it was mostly average. Either if you liked it or hated it at the time, we fast forward to today where we are fortunate enough to get a sequel. I managed to download the demo for Knack 2 and here is my thoughts on this short little experience.
Firstly when you start up the demo you will notice that it was featured in the video above. I’ve marked the exact point in the video so if you click it, you will start at the right point. It doesn’t show the entirety, but it will give you the idea.
With my short-lived span actually getting to play the “game” I immediately recalled the same feel I got with the original Knack. I love platformers and I love action games and Knack 2 screams these elements and promises new mechanics out of the gate. I noticed quick-time events, and I’m not sure if Knack had them (its been a while folks) but they are indeed there. The quick-time events seem limited to cut-scene-like scenarios but we will have to see. It is also notable that ‘Knack’ from Knack 2 will receive some new powers and moves that he didn’t have in his previous installment (such as a heavy punch and being able to downsize/up-size).
The demo level was designed well with a mixture of good platforming and a variety of enemy patterns. The graphics hold well in regards to the style they are trying to achieve, and the frame-rate felt very smooth. To my knowledge, the current PSN demo is single-player only but judging from the trailers and screenshots we’ve seen, Knack 2 will be a couch co-op game as well. I may not be the target demographic, but I think kids will enjoy Knack 2 if it lives up to the demo. We don’t see many games you can sit on the couch and play together using the same console.
Here is to hoping Knack 2 delivers a solid platformer and couch-coop experience that the market sorely has need of!
