Gas Guzzlers, a racing game that joins the line with other similar games like Blur and perhaps more notably Mario Kart, takes the playful joy of beating your opponent in a race and adds in the disturbingly satisfying and murderous rampage of games like Vigilante 8.
Played in third person, Gas Guzzlers starts the player with a low performance vehicle that gets levels up by earning money in a series of challenging races. Much like the racing part of the game RAGE except for one, minor detail. Players get to pick up weapons, upgrade and bonuses while driving that gives them an advantage over their opponents. From machine guns and free money to free repairs, Gas Guzzlers give the player a chance to really go the mile while destroying every car in the way.
I am not a big fan of racing games at all, but I found myself thoroughly enjoying this game. The only downside I could see so far was the voiceovers. Overly dramatic and more reminiscent of Duke Nukem type characters than a sports announcer, the voice overs and voice actions seemed a little too farfetched. It actually made me enjoy the game slightly less, but only when I heard it.
Graphically, the game works well. It’s nothing like Battlefield 3, but you won’t be distracted by the quality of the game.
The controls take a little time to get used to but for the most part its the normal WASD form of movement with little to no mouse buttons at all.
If you enjoy racing games and vehicle combat, then you are going to have a good time with Gas Guzzlers.
