How do you write a review for the most poorly executed game ever and when you have never raged so hard in your life? Well, it is very difficult to do so while maintaining a professional unbiased view. I have tossed and turned with how I was going to score and rate this game and I have even taken a couple of breaks and gone back to it trying again. Each time resulting in me wanting to smash my fist through my monitor.
Although the concept and the ideas are great I am beyond disappointed. I am so disappointed that I am frustrated and that makes me angry. When you first turn on Gas Guzzlers you see the graphics, which are surprisingly good, followed by different race types including campaign, battling type races and multiplayer. Things don’t look to shabby but it is all downhill from here.
Initially I had high hopes for this game and I was really excited at the idea of being able to “battle” while racing. This brought me back to my Super Mario Kart days when I could drop banana peels and oil causing my baby sister to crash. Even though she would cry, because she always lost, I had a blast kicking her cute little butt. So I figured these more modern realistic graphics combined with this old school, classic battle technique would rock my socks but boy was I ever wrong.
I have never seen anyone rage so hard since Mortal Kombat on the first playstation when I would button mash my brother to oblivion! Yes that is right I button mashed. 1) It was the only way I could ever win because I couldn’t remember combos and 2) hearing my brother scream cheater was priceless. But enough chit chat, here is why I think you should NOT buy Gas Guzzlers.
First of all it is impossible to win races. Maybe I just suck that bad but no matter what I did, tried or how hard I practiced I could not even place in the top 3. On several occasions I would get into first but within seconds I would get plowed by an AI racer and I’d end up all the way back in last.
This is the biggest and of course the most significant problem in game as it effects every aspect. You need to place in the top 3 to win any prize money. Of course you acquire bonus green in the races but this is nothing compared to what you would get if you place. Everything costs money! During races you crash and smash the crap out of your car and of course you must repair it in between races, which isn’t free. Need a better engine? Maybe you want better and cooler tires. Well again, you need money! The only thing you get for free is the paint job for your car and the license plate.
Secondly you must UNLOCK new cars and upgrades. Now don’t me wrong I don’t think the unlocks are bad because I believe you should have to work and earn upgrades, but like I mentioned previously all you can do at the earlier stages of game play is paint your crappy little starter car. You may be thinking they might have a couple different options for rims, stickers, tires etc. Nope. Everything is locked. You can’t even scan through the locked options just to look at them. The best part and most disappointing of all is the lack of weapons on your starter car. This is a battle racing game after all right? So any logical person would think that they would at least start with one weapon – nope – wrong again.
Thirdly the AI is way over powered. Okay, so they don’t have weapons either and aren’t at an advantage in that area, but when it comes down to a car vs car comparison the AI cars look just as bad, but appear bigger. And yet they hall ass leaving you in their dust; literally. And don’t even think about smashing your car into theirs to try and make them crash because the only car flying across the track into that rock wall is your little dumper.
The bottom line is that Gas Guzzlers has every idea it needs to be an amazing game but they just couldn’t seem to tie all the ends together and deliver it to its fullest potential. It does have great graphics, nice looking cars, awesome upgrades and unlocks to fully customize your car, but the amount of timeyou have to put in is so not worth it, unless you are one those people who don’t mind redoing races over and over… or simply put “grinding”.
