Codemasters’ up and coming title Formula 1 2012 is recently available, in demo format, on the Xbox Marketplace. Now for all of you who have yet to play this demo you are really missing out. I am not a racing fan by any means, rather I am anti-racing games, and if I can sit down and really enjoy a racing game that says a lot.
As it is only a demo there are minimal things you can actually try out and do, so don’t expect to be able to hop on and jump into a campaign because this demo does not work like that.
First things first, you have the “Young Driver Test”. Now all though likely not imperative for all you racing fans, I would definitely suggest it for those of you new to the Formula 1 series. The Young Drivers Test makes sure you learn all the necessary controls, moves and techniques to efficiently play F1 2012. Now, as I had never played a Formula 1 racing game before this, it was both very helpful to me and yet extremely frustrating. It is helpful because you learn everything! From maneuvering those tricky corners to how soon you should break so you can completely stop in the marked zone.
The reason this mode is frustrating is not because it is like a tutorial but because of how picky they are when it comes to completing the tasks. When you finish the “race” and get to the marked end zone you will either PASS/FAIL depending on whether you achieved all the tasks or not. Now when I say they are picky, I mean SUPER picky. You may think while racing “oh I was so close I am sure that counted”, but nope. You must get the task 100% complete. Which can become really repetitive if you are not a regular to the racing game genre.
Regardless of the frustrations and difficulties I had playing the “Young Driver Test,” it really did me wonders. Once I finally got to try my hand at simply racing I had piles and piles of fun, so much so I was wishing they had a taste of the campaign in the demo.
I am confident when I say Formula 1 2012 is going to be very successful, especially among racing fans a like. Possibly even among newbies to the series. If you have yet to check out the F1 2012 Demo do so now. Also be sure to check out the gameplay video provided below.
