We have a little while to wait before Dirt Showdown hits the open market, but CodeMaster’s has been gracious enough to give us a demo to pass the time. I took the time to play this the other day and I found it to be actually enjoyable. Here’s the rundown of my experience:
When I first started the demo, I wasn’t too sure what to expect other then some basic racing gameplay. I haven’t played much of Dirt in the past, and it is kind of sad in a way. The controls were pretty straight forward and the graphics were amazing; exactly what you need to see in this generation. It’s a demo so you’re limited to one car and 1 small map. The game rewards you for smashing/shunting/wrecking the computer controlled cars around you. You will gain more boost juice and feel great satisfaction as you take on their position. You have to watch it however. If you take too much damage, you are wrecked.
Once completing the single-player race, you are able to send a challenge to a friend. Doing so is very important as it will unlock a Multiplayer Demolition Derby mode. Now this mode is the cream of the demo! You aren’t racing against the other players, you are simply trying to smash them up the hardest and quickest. When you get smashed to the max then you will be removed from the game for a few seconds. Don’t worry though, because you will be able to respawn.
The bottom line is that this game looks like its going to be very enjoyable. The demo felt a little limited single-player wise, but the demolition derby multiplayer definitely makes up for it. Download the demo for yourself and see what I’ve been talking about. If you love racing games, I highly doubt it will be a waste of your time.
Dirt Showdown releases May 29th for XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3.
