Devil May Cry Demo Impressions

Earlier this week, Capcom released the demo for their upcoming release, Devil May Cry, scheduled to release January 15th, 2013. With the demo and a handful of changes to the series, what is the impression that IRB Gamer is getting from this?

The demo allows you to play two missions: Under Watch and Secret Ingredient. Dante’s image has changed drastically, which is the most important decision that will rub faithful fans of the series the wrong way. However, when taking a step a back and looking at the Devil May Cry as a fresh relaunch, Dante’s character looks fresh and modern.

Dante is obviously considered a terrorist for his actions in the real world.  But when cameras spot you, your surroundings shifts to another realm. As you move through the area you can still see people conversing and walking as shadowed figures.

Gameplay feels more interactive than the original. The experience portrays a cross between Assassin’s Creed physics and Prototype’s action. There’s are some amazing combinations that can be stringed together. I personally had fun lashing on to them, launching them in the air, shooting them a bit, then taking the action to the sky for an epic fatality.

To some, it will be a hassle trying to remember the handful of controls while combating. You can button mash your way to kills if you’d prefer, but you’ll need to master moves before you get too far. Not only this but remembering the difference in controls when latching on to things (angel lift) and pulling out buildings (demon pull) to have ground to jump on.

There are hidden areas, lost souls, keys and vital stars to find in Under Watch. The game drew me in to where I almost expected an achievement from opening a hidden door or capturing a lost soul.

Camera angles change throughout gameplay which reminded me of Uncharted. It may start as third person, then all of a sudden change to a front facing camera. I remember older DMC games giving you more freedom.

Based on the demo alone, Devil May Cry seems to be a pretty decent launch for the beginning 2013. With a little under two months until the release window, there’s plenty of time to get those controls down.
