“Steampunk” has been quite the popular genre over the last few years, leaving some of us, myself included, wondering what happened to “Cyberpunk”. Well, developer CD Projekt RED hasn’t forgotten those of us with Cyberpunk roots and has just released an amazing CG trailer showcasing their upcoming release Cyberpunk 2077. I’ll save the intensity and spoilers for you to see for yourself, but prepare yourself for some “Wow!” to say the least.
The creators of Cyberpunk 2077 promise that players will be able to explore and experience the “true” Cyberpunk genre as they are thrust into the future. Set in the year 2077, a dark future has set in where technology is both a savior and a curse to humankind. Players will experience a multi-threaded, non-linear story specially crafted by CD Projekt Red taking place in Night City and it’s surrounding areas. Based on the acclaimed Tabletop RPG game, Cyberpunk 2020, players will be able freely roam the open world environment and visit iconic locations from the pen-and-paper game such as a Gang controlled combat zone, the Afterlife, and Forlorn Hope.
Cyberpunk 2077 is full of the ghosts of humanities past, Greed, Violence, Poverty, Drugs… but new troubles also plague mankind in this bleak future. Perhaps the worst of which is the “Braindance”. Braindances are recordings of another individuals experiences, emotions, and stimuli. Many folks in this bleak future rely on braindancing as a way of living out a more exciting life. These braindancings range from the simple, mass-produced mega-corporation versions of perhaps experiencing mountain climbing or running a marathon to those created illegally by the underground. Needless to say, entering the mind of a serial killer, for example, could lead to dire consequences for someone just looking for a “thrill”…
In the world of 2077 the separation between rich and poor is larger than ever. Drugs, violence, braindance addicts, psychos on the loose, this is the world our player steps foot into. What they make of it remains to be seen, but I, for one, am quite excited for the journey.
