Followers of Xbox Live Independent Games are no stranger to the Avatar “Fill in the Blank” titles. Part of the fun of Xbox Live is customizing your digital persona and being able to bring that persona into a game is an amazingly fun feature. When playing this title, you may enjoy suiting your Avatar up for the Gridiron!
As with most sports games, the usual Game Modes make their appearance, Quick Play and Season Mode are the main features here. Quick Play allows for local, online and system link play and supports multiple players on a single system. Season Mode allows you to take your Avatar Dream Team through a simulated season with eyes on the ultimate prize, a Mega Bowl Championship!
The customization options in this title are incredibly impressive. Not only can you create and edit custom rosters, but you can design your own plays for both offense and defense! Take your gameplay to the next level by fooling opponents with plays they could never expect or alter that run formation to give a common play a different look.
In addition to the customization offered, there are over 80 titles to unlock through playing the game and accomplishing certain feats as well as an in-depth stats page to keep track of your illustrious career on the gridiron. Some of these earn-able titles are basic and easy to unlock while some will require devotion and craftiness in your play to unlock, only the elite will earn the final title, granted by unlocking all the in-game titles!
The game controls are very streamlined, with offensive passing plays color coordinated to match the Xbox controller buttons and a very convenient bar is shown at the bottom on both offense and defense (again color-coded to the buttons) of what options you have available, such as Sprint, Dive Tackle, or a Spin Move while rushing.
Playing on the offensive side of the ball will take little time to learn but much time to master, defense however seems to be a bit lacking. The AI players often miss assignments, leading to big gains for the opposing team, and there is definitely some issues with making tackles successfully. Although perhaps playing successful defense just has a steeper learning curve. All in all, be prepared for some shootouts and high scoring matches in the beginnings of your career.
The graphics and audio suit the game well. A Football field full of Avatars just looks darned good and the audio tracks fit the gridiron mentality well. This is definitely a game you can sink your teeth into and the customization options allow the player to get out what they put in. Quick match and online play offer endless replay-ability and the Season mode will keep you coming back for more to claim that Mega Bowl title.
This is definitely an excellent entry into the XBLIG market and makes for good fun, especially when playing with friends and showcasing shnazzy Avatar outfits. For a mere 80 Microsoft Points, this title is highly recommended for any football fan or anyone who likes to see their Xbox Avatar do some amazing dances. Score a few touchdowns and kick back to watch the Avatar celebrations!
